La Bague de Kenza: Sugar, Spice and Everything Nice

After walking all the way from the 13th arrondissement, which is essentially as far south as you can get, to the other side of the river, with a brief shopping stop at Le Bon Marché, I made it to all the way just by the Louvre to La Bague de Kenza, an Algerian patisserie. I was having an ethnic sort of day, so I was absolutely determined to get there and get some Algerian pastries in my tummy. IT WAS SO WORTH IT. I’ve had Middle Eastern goods before, for example at La Grande Mosquée, but this time, I didn’t have to be slightly conscious of that fact that normally, I wouldn’t be allowed in the mosque, etc., etc. It was a very cute, clean, warm tea room with very friendly staff members. I ordered some of their special mint tea, three pastries from their beautiful assortment, and a Mhajeb, a “crêpe” with spicy vegetables and cheese. I’m literally obsessed. The pastries aren’t too sweet but they are SO flavorful – the pistachio, almonds, spices, floral aromas add such color to the taste- and go fantastically with the tea. Who needs morals when you have food to warm the soul??
